Streaming 101: Four Steps to “Cut the Cord”

“Cord-cutting” – getting rid of traditional cable and satellite TV in favor of digital streaming services – is a movement that has picked up momentum over the past five years.

And it’s easy to understand why – with the wide variety of affordable streaming options available today, there’s little need to get locked-in to a traditional TV provider. Cord-cutters generally save money and enjoy the same – if not better – access to digital entertainment.

That said, the process of cutting the cord can be stressful. And there are so many options out there that it can be overwhelming to begin. (That’s why StreamChef exists, by the way – we want to make it easier for you! Make sure you check out our Streaming Cookbook for personalized streaming recommendations to fit your needs.)

In this blog entry, we’re going to help you get started in four easy steps – so that you can join the cord-cutter community with confidence!

  1. Contact your cable / satellite provider and ask about any penalties or fees that may be applicable. Depending on the terms of your agreement with your TV provider, you may be subject to fees or penalties when you cancel. In some cases, if you signed an annual agreement, it may make sense to wait until the contract expires before you cancel service. Talk to your provider before you make a final decision so that you don’t have any surprises.
  2. Make a list of the key channels, shows, and movies that are important to you and your family. What type of entertainment is most important to you? Are there specific shows, channels, or networks that you can’t live without? Are live sports important to you? What about movies and/or kids programming? Make a list.
  3. Identify your “menu” of streaming services. Once you’ve made your list of key programs and channels, use the StreamChef website to help create your “menu” – the combination of streaming platforms you’ll use to replace your TV provider. Make sure you tally up the costs involved so that you know what your new monthly bill is going to be.
  4. Take the plunge! Once you’ve figured out which platforms you’ll need to cut the cord without losing access to the programming you need… it’s go time! Cancel your cable service, subscribe to your new streaming platforms, and you’re done! Welcome to the club – the cord-cutting community is a great place to be!

Remember to use our Streaming Cookbook for personalized streaming recommendations based on your priorities and interests. Happy streaming!
