PlayStation Vue is Shutting Down in January 2020 - What Does That Mean for Streamers Everywhere?
In October, Sony announced that they’re shutting down PlayStation Vue – their streaming service, which was built as a true alternative to cable and satellite TV.
PlayStation Vue offered movie and TV show content, but was primarily focused on live TV – including sports and news coverage.
Sony was never able to make PlayStation Vue into a profitable part of their business and so they’re closing down the project.
What does that mean for you?
Well, obviously, if you’re a PlayStation Vue subscriber you’ll likely want to find a replacement service. Make sure to use our Streaming Cookbook to help you choose the perfect service.
For streamers in general, Sony’s decision raises interesting questions. Is there an appetite among consumers for cable replacement services like PlayStation Vue?
Because they offer live TV – including sports – those services are typically priced quite a bit higher than other streaming options. PlayStation Vue costs around $50 per month, as opposed to platforms like Netflix and Hulu that don’t offer live programing, but are very affordable at under $15 per month.
It’s too early to know whether PlayStation Vue’s shutdown is an isolated incident or the beginning of a trend away from live TV streaming services – but at Savvy Streamers, we’ll be watching closely and we’ll keep you in the know.
